This quilt was made using a 'Stack-n-Whack'
method! I think it is just
awesome.
The method was created by Bethany Reynolds of
Ellsworth, ME.
Basically, you cut identical strips of the repeating
pattern in your fabric using a rotary cutter and mat . Iron these strips
so that they lay perfectly flat. Then you pick a recognizable point in the
pattern and use that to pin the strips together so that they line up
exactly. You then cut the pieces needed, again using the rotary cutter to
cut through all thicknesses at once. You are then ready to sew the block
together (being careful to line these pieces up exactly). You'll be
amazed at the different looks you get with different prints!
Here
are some helpful tips I've found. Sometimes you
want to choose the fabric based solely on color as the pictures don't
necessarily show up in the finished Stack-n-Whack blocks.
You have to buy longer fabric depending on the length
of the pattern which is repeated. Also, unless you are worried about the
colors bleeding, do not prewash the fabric; the sizing will help the strips
lay flat when pinning them together. There are several Stack-n-Whack books available - and you wouldn't
believe some of the ideas shown in them! Bethany Reynolds has been doing
this for a while, so she has become more and more creative.
