This is a simple log cabin block. It is simple to make, that is! You start with a square of fabric for the center, then add a strip of a different color to
each side around and around until the block is the right size. This block is made in the traditional
way having dark fabrics on two adjacent sides, and light fabrics on the other
two sides. This gives you a lot to
work with when you put the blocks together to make a whole quilt top. You can rearrange the blocks and see
many different patterns emerge. This block is demonstrated in the book, The
Quilter’s Handbook. In fact, two
different methods for a log cabin block are taught.
This is one of my
favorite books. It has instructions
and tips for making so many different quilts using many different methods. It includes chapters on making applique,
English and American block piecing, six classic quilts, 3D or illusion
patchwork, foundation piecing, miniature quilts, Seminole, and Bargello quilts,
among many others. There are also chapters discussing equipment
and materials, designing a quilt, quilt layout and assembly, types of quilting,
‘the quilter and the computer’, exhibiting quilts, care and
conservation of quilts, and many more. There are even chapters on making yo-yo
quilts and a folded star placemat.
book has such a great variety of teachings, it is great for the experienced
quilter as well as the beginner.
Besides the 24 original projects demonstrated, it gives ideas and hints
that are useful. This book has
something for everyone, and I would highly recommend it to
