This delicate little hankie was embroidered by my great-grandmother, Nettie Heinz. It is a special treasure to me because it is one of the only things I have that she made herself.  I love the beautiful N and especially the tiny flowers in the letter.  The purple N was made using tiny satin stitches.  I'm amazed at how strait the lines are.  I hope I inherited some of this talent!  The flowers were also made with tiny stitches in two shades of green.

She also tatted the edging.  She used a fine cotton thread in verigated colors, then whip-stitched this lace to the edge of the hankie, which is a fine woven linen.

Nettie lived to be 96 years old.  She was still alive when my first three children were born.  She told many great stories of growing up on the prairie, riding in a horse-drawn wagon, wearing braids, and walking miles to school every day.  I will treasure this personal item of hers always!
